       The Season

       I looked for its arms and found you
       sitting in the branches
       with drawings from a children’s book.

       I felt for its breath and watched
       the slow wind ceding
       to the scatter of leaves.

       But it was in the arcade when I realised
       a broken escalator
       is still a functioning staircase
       and the windows cried Special! Last days!
