» The Monkey Magic Tour, Fri June 6 @ Bar Mode (Palmerston North); Sat June 7 @ San Francisco Bathhouse (Wgtn)
One of New Zealand’s most underrated and innovative indie labels, Monkey Records, has been putting on a number of shows around the country, showcasing some of the more diverse and enjoyable NZ music around. The Wellington and Palmy shows feature The Hot Grits, Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band, DJ Balkanetic and Uncle Barnie. The Palmy show is free too! They’ve also just put out a compilation, Monkey Magic Vol II which is highly recommended and kick-ass.

» Liam Finn w/ Connan Mockasin and the Mot, Fri June 13 @ Bodega (Wgtn); Sat June 14 @ The Powerstation (Akld)
Fresh from making a stir on some of the big US and UK publications and TV shows (including Letterman, Jools Holland, Rolling Stone), Liam Finn returns for a couple of shows. Playing with now rarely seen/English-dwelling Connan, this could be one of the best local shows in a while.

» The Bravery, Fri June 13 @ Kings Arms; Sat June 14 @ San Francisco Bathhouse (Wgtn)
New York synth-pop/new wave band The Bravery have released two highly US and UK charting albums. They’ve been subject to considerable NME attention in their career, and a well-publicised feud with The Killers (to whom they share a similar sound and record label) has also managed to draw attention away from their music. However, their crowd-pleasing sound will go down well with fans of their big rivals.

» Kimya Dawson, Tues June 24 @ Auckland Girls Grammar School Hall; Wed June 25 @ The Paramount (Wgtn)
Singer-songwriter, and former Moldy Peaches member/member of the anti-folk movement Kimya Dawson, is probably most famous now for her songs on the indie hit Juno. She’s playing two all-ages shows which will give both the young and old ‘uns a chance to experience some good old-fashioned indie lo-fi music.

» The Black Keys, Thur June 26 @ The Civic (Chch); Fri June 27 @ The Front Room (Wgtn); Sat June 28 @ The Powerstation (Akld)
Explosive blues rock duo The Black Keys are playing three shows in New Zealand to celebrate the release of their fifth album Attack and Release. Their dirty Southern blues have received huge props from everyone from Metallica to Radiohead, and Time Magazine rated them as one of the best acts of 2003. Their live show is already approaching legendary status.

Upcoming Gigs: Polka Dot Dot Dot, Mark Kozelek, Band of Horses, The Breeders, Brian Jonestown Massacre.
