Lumière Gig Guide—July 2008
BRANNAVAN GNANALINGAM trawls the local music calendar to bring us the month’s best gigs. This July: Songs w/ Surf City, Samuel Flynn Scott & the B.O.P, Daysend w/ Subtract, Polka Dot Dot Dot, I Heart Hiroshima w/ Thought Creature and Little Pictures, Band of Horses, Mark Kozelek.
» Songs w/ Surf City, Thur July 3 @ Whammy Bar (Akld); Fri July 4 @ D.O.C. (Acoustic Matinee) (Akld); Fri July 4 @ Dog Bollix (Akld); Sat July 5 @ Happy (Wgtn)
Featuring former members of This Night Creeps, and prominent Max Doyle, the now-Aussie based lo-fi indie Songs are popping over the Tasman to play a few shows for their new EP. Featuring support from the rising Surf City, this could be an excellent night of music.
» Samuel Flynn Scott & the B.O.P, Fri July 4 @ San Francisco Bathhouse (Wgtn)
Scott and his band tour the country in commemoration of their excellent newly released album Straight Answer Machine. Also playing: July 17 @ Phat Club (Nelson), July 18 @ Dux de Lux (Chch), July 19 @ The Penguin Club (Oamaru), July 20 @ The Backstage (Dunedin), July 25 @ The Whammy Bar (Akld), July 26 @ The Sawmill Café (Leigh).
» Daysend w/ Subtract, Fri July 4 @ Kings Arms (Akld); Sat July 5 @ Valve (Wgtn)
Aussie thrash metallers Daysend, fresh off supporting Judas Priest/Cavalera Conspiracy on tour, come to New Zealand for a couple of a shows. Both shows include NZ veterans Subtract. Auckland also has Cause for Alliance, Blacktooth and Never Repent, while Wellington has Blacktooth, Destitude & Omen. Door sales are $20 for a night of riffery and thrash.
» Polka Dot Dot Dot, Sat July 12 @ Whammy Bar (Akld); Fri July 18 @ Happy (Wgtn)
American group folkie/indie/band of awesomeness, who caused a stir with their now pseudo-legendary set at last year’s Camp A Low Hum have announced a massive NZ tour. Many of their dates have yet to be confirmed but according to their MySpace site, towns planned include Hamilton, Motueka, Nelson, Barrytown, Christchurch, Dunedin, Stewart Island, Te Anau, Wanaka, Okarito, Wanganui, Palmerston North.
» I Heart Hiroshima w/ Thought Creature and Little Pictures, Wed July 16 @ Kings Arms (Akld); Thur July 17 @ Ward Lane Tavern (Hamilton); Fri July 18 @ Bodega (Wgtn)
Unpredictable Aussie indie group whose previous show in Auckland this year with Ratatat was extremely well-received, are popping into the North Island for three shows. They’re playing with three of Wellington’s most promising acts too (Thought Creature’s album is shit-hot too), and should be an excellent night.
» Band of Horses, Thurs July 31 @ Kings Arms (Akld)
The sweet melodies of American indie band Band of Horses has borne comparisons to the likes of The Flaming Lips and My Morning Jacket and has been showcased on two beautiful albums. They’re only playing one show in Auckland unfortunately, but is well-worth checking out.
» Mark Kozelek, Thurs July 31 @ San Francisco Bathhouse; Fri August 1 @ Kings Arms (Akld)
The haunting singer-songwriter behind the likes of the Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon plays New Zealand for the first time ever. He’s dragged down a band with him, and his latest album, April, is wonderful. Highly recommended.
Upcoming Gigs: The Breeders, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Willard Grant Conspiracy, The New Pornographers.
