Lumière Gig Guide—August 2008
BRANNAVAN GNANALINGAM trawls the local music calendar to bring us the month’s best gigs. This August: Renee-Louise Carafice, The Breeders, Stereo Total & JD Samson, Beach House w/Bachelorette.
» Renee-Louise Carafice, Nationwide from Wed Aug 6 @ Harbour Light (Lyttleton)
Chicago-based singer-songwriter returns home to play a massive nationwide tour to support her debut album Tells You to Fight. She’s opened for Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and Xiu Xiu, and she’s recorded at Steve Albini’s studio, so she’s got some considerable cultural capital and indie props. Well worth a look. Also playing Oamaru (Aug 7 @ Penguin Club), Dunedin (Aug 8 @ Circadian Rhythm), Wanaka (Aug 9 @ Cinema Paradiso), Queenstown (Aug 10 @ Dux De Lux), Hokitika (Aug 13 @ Crooked Mile Theatre), Nelson (Aug 15 @ Yaza), Picton (Aug 16 @ Le Café), Wellington (Aug 20 @ Mighty Mighty), New Plymouth (Aug 21 @ Brooke Ale House), Thames (Aug 22 @ Nectar), Kerikeri (Aug 23 @ The Venue).
» The Breeders, Fri Aug 8 @ Bruce Mason Centre (Akld); Sat Aug 9 @ San Francisco Bathhouse (Wgtn)
Indie legends The Breeders have moved venue in Auckland away from the Kings Arms to the Bruce Mason Centre. However my guess is tickets will still be hard to come by.
» Stereo Total & JD Samson, Sat Aug 16 @ San Francisco Bathhouse
Berlin based artist Stereo Total is described as “multi-lingual, electro-garage‘n’rockabilly flambé-mange” which sounds like pure awesomeness. Support comes from Le Tigre’s JD Samson who will DJ up a storm. This could be an absolute ripper of a gig.
» Beach House w/Bachelorette, Fri Aug 29 @ Bodega (Wgtn); Sat Aug 30 @ Kings Arms (Akld)
The beautiful Baltimore duo Beach House are playing two shows in New Zealand, and playing them both with the brilliant Christchurch musician Bachelorette. Auckland has Japanese artist Noriko, while Wellington has Nik Brinkman too.
Upcoming Gigs: The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dizzee Rascal, Peaches, Willard Grant Conspiracy, The New Pornographers, Howe Gelb.
