Lumière Gig Guide—December 2008
BRANNAVAN GNANALINGAM trawls the local music calendar to bring us the month’s best gigs. This December: The Ruby Suns w/ The Conjurors and Street Beat, The Bats, Collapsing Cities w/ Naked & Famous and Body Corporate, 24 Hour Movie Marathon, Holy Fuck!, The Mountain Goats, Peter and the Test Tube Babies, Rhythm and Vines.
» The Ruby Suns w/ The Conjurors and Street Beat, Thur Dec 4 @ Kings Arms (Akld)
World conquering Ruby Suns (kind of, but they’re doing brilliantly well) are going to be playing a number of shows throughout the country in January, but they’re playing a one-off show on the 4th in Auckland.
» The Bats, Thur Dec 11 @ Al’s Bar (Chch); Fri Dec 12 @ Cassette#9 (Akld); Sat Dec 13 @ The Adelaide (Wgtn)
New Zealand indie legends The Bats are doing a smattering of shows to promote the release of their new album The Guilty Office. One of the great bands, the new album should be fantastic too.
» Collapsing Cities w/ Naked & Famous and Body Corporate, Fri Dec 12 @ Kings Arms (Akld)
Collapsing Cities have been making a name for themselves in Britain, and return to NZ to play a homecoming show. While NME proclaiming them one of the “ten hopes of the near future” might or might not be good thing, there’s certainly a bit of buzz surrounding the band.
» 24 Hour Movie Marathon, Sat Dec 6 @ Hollywood Cinema (Akld); Sat Dec 13 @ Paramount Cinema (Wgtn)
Of course, not musically related, but nonetheless a welcome return to the Wellington arts calendar (although going ahead in Auckland, it was cancelled in Wellington last year). As fun as watching movies for 24 hours straight can possibly get and I’m not being sarcastic. Do try it.
» Holy Fuck!, Sun Dec 14 @ 420 (Akld); Mon Dec 15 @ San Francisco Bathhouse (Wgtn)
Those who liked last year’s sell-out show Battles will no doubt love these Toronto mischief makers. Dance/noise/electronic/organic instruments are all thrown into the mix, and their reputation for a ridiculously amazing live show will proven to all who come – highly recommended.
» The Mountain Goats, Wed Dec 17 @ Kings Arms (Akld); Thur Dec 18 @ San Francisco Bathhouse (Wgtn)
John Darnielle, one of the sharpest and most interesting lo-fi pioneers, returns to New Zealand for two shows. One of the most beloved performers from the last decade, his newest release Heretic Pride keeps up a fine streak of excellent albums.
» Peter and the Test Tube Babies, Wed Dec 31 @ Kings Arms (Akld); Fri Jan 2 @ Basement Bar (New Plymouth); Sat Jan 3 @ Al’s Bar (Chch)
The Brighton Punk Pathetique pioneers, Peter and Test Tube Babies return to NZ to play three shows and drink as much beer as possible. All shows feature the Bludgers and Badtown, while Vicious Rumour play in Auckland and New Plymouth, Last Orders Auckland only, Shut the Hell Up! New Plymouth only, and Desperate Measures & Oi’s II Men in Christchurch.
» Rhythm and Vines, Dec 29-31 @ Waiohika Estate (Gisborne)
If you haven’t got tickets for this, and want to, I’d try and sort something out soon. As if being in Gisborne for New Years isn’t enough, the organisers had to go and assemble a quite amazing line-up. Public Enemy (oh dear god, the greatest hip-hop band ever)! Franz Ferdinand! Cut Copy! Carl Cox, Santogold, the Kooks, Shihad, Ladyhawke, DJ Nu-Mark, Fur Patrol, Late of the Pier, Digitalism, Fort Knox Five, Naked & Famous, SJD, P Money, Recloose, The Datsuns, The Ruby Suns, Little Bushman, Anika Moa, Collapsing Cities, Disasteradio, Katchafire, Phoenix Foundation, Olmecha Supreme, So So Modern, The Black Seeds, Batrider, Bang! Bang! Eche!, Connan Mockasin, Die! Die! Die!, Over the Atlantic plus many more. Wow!
Upcoming gigs: Dodos (Chch, Wgtn, Akld, Leigh), Fleet Foxes (Akld & Wgtn), Throwing Muses (Wgtn), Spiritualized (Akld), Teenagers, Metronomy, Arctic Monkeys (Akld & Wgtn), Big Day Out (tickets on sale), Leonard Cohen, Girl Talk (Akld & Wgtn), Stereolab (Akld & Wgtn), No Age, Jay Reatard, Ryan Adams, Of Montreal, WOMAD (tickets on sale), Camp A Low Hum. There is a lot more awesomeness to be announced for Feburary – who cares about this global economic crisis?
